How to Set Up Matter Devices: The Complete Guide

Before You Start

Every Matter device comes with a setup code — either a QR code or a numeric code (format: XXXX-XXX-XXXX). You'll need this to pair the device.

Setting Up with Apple Home

Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad

Tap the + button → Add Accessory

Scan the Matter QR code on the device (or enter the code manually)

Choose a room and name for the device

Done! The device is now in your Apple Home

Tip: Make sure you have an Apple TV or HomePod as a home hub for remote access.

Setting Up with Google Home

Open the Google Home app

Tap Devices → Add → New device

Select your home

Scan the Matter QR code

Assign a room and customize settings

Done!

Tip: A Google Nest Hub or Nest speaker acts as your Matter controller.

Setting Up with Amazon Alexa

Open the Alexa app

Tap Devices → + → Add Device

Select Matter as the device type

Scan the QR code or enter the setup code

Multi-Admin: Using One Device with Multiple Platforms

One of Matter's best features is multi-admin — you can add a single device to multiple ecosystems. After initial setup:

In your primary controller app, find the device settings

Look for "Turn on pairing mode" or "Share device"

Open your second platform's app and add a new Matter device

The device now works in both ecosystems simultaneously

Troubleshooting

• Device not found? Make sure your phone and the device are on the same network
• Pairing fails? Reset the device and try again — some devices need a factory reset before first Matter pairing
• Slow response? Check if you have a Thread border router nearby for Thread devices
