How to Set Up Matter Devices: The Complete Guide

Before You Start

Every Matter device comes with a setup code — either a QR code or a numeric code (format: XXXX-XXX-XXXX). You'll need this to pair the device.

Setting Up with Apple Home

1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad
2. Tap the + button → Add Accessory
3. Scan the Matter QR code on the device (or enter the code manually)
4. Choose a room and name for the device
5. Done! The device is now in your Apple Home

Tip: Make sure you have an Apple TV or HomePod as a home hub for remote access.

Setting Up with Google Home

1. Open the Google Home app
2. Tap Devices → Add → New device
3. Select your home
4. Scan the Matter QR code
5. Assign a room and customize settings
6. Done!

Tip: A Google Nest Hub or Nest speaker acts as your Matter controller.

Setting Up with Amazon Alexa

1. Open the Alexa app
2. Tap Devices → + → Add Device
3. Select Matter as the device type
4. Scan the QR code or enter the setup code
5. Follow the on-screen prompts
6. Done!

Setting Up with Samsung SmartThings

1. Open the SmartThings app
2. Tap + → Device → Scan QR code
3. Scan the Matter QR code
4. Follow setup prompts
5. Done!

Multi-Admin: Using One Device with Multiple Platforms

A useful Matter feature is multi-admin — you can add a single device to multiple ecosystems. After initial setup:

1. In your primary controller app, find the device settings
2. Look for "Turn on pairing mode" or "Share device"
3. Open your second platform's app and add a new Matter device
4. The device now works in both ecosystems simultaneously

Troubleshooting

• Device not found? Make sure your phone and the device are on the same network
• Pairing fails? Reset the device and try again — some devices need a factory reset before first Matter pairing
• Slow response? Check if you have a Thread border router nearby for Thread devices
