Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information MatterCatalog ("we", "us") collects when you use mattercatalog.com, and why. MatterCatalog is a directory of Matter smart home devices. We do not sell products, take orders or payments, or ask for shipping addresses or phone numbers. When you buy something, you do so on the retailer's own website, under that retailer's privacy policy.

MatterCatalog is published by MatterCatalog, Mill Valley, California.

1. Information you give us

  • Email updates. If you enter your email address in a "Stay updated" form, we store that address, the page you signed up from and the date, so we can send you updates about newly certified Matter devices.
  • Accounts. An account is optional. It is needed only to save devices and to set price alerts. If you create one, your name, email address and password are handled by Google Firebase Authentication. We never see or store your password.
  • Price alerts. If you are signed in with a verified email address and create a price alert, we store the product, your target price and an identifier derived from your account. We check alerts against current prices once a day and show triggered alerts in your account. You can delete an alert at any time from your account.
  • Emails you send us. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message.

2. Information collected automatically

  • Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to record which pages are viewed and which retailer links are clicked (the product, the retailer, the page, and the price shown at the time), together with the standard device and browser information Google Analytics collects. Google Analytics uses cookies. You can opt out with Google's opt-out browser add-on.
  • Affiliate links. Many store links are affiliate links (see our Affiliate Disclosure). Apart from the Impact script described below, no affiliate network receives anything from us or your browser until you click one of these links. When you do, your browser goes to the store, sometimes through the network's own redirect address. The store or network receives the usual request information (such as your IP address and browser type) and may set a cookie on its own domain, or add a click identifier to the store's web address, so that a purchase can be credited to us. That happens on their sites and under their privacy policies. The programs whose links appear on MatterCatalog are:
    • Amazon Associates (links to Amazon.com carry our Associates tag);
    • eBay Partner Network (links to eBay carry our campaign ID);
    • CJ (Commission Junction), Impact, Rakuten Advertising and Awin, which run affiliate programs for brands and stores.
    We may also use Sovrn Commerce in the future (our application is pending); no Sovrn Commerce links are in use on MatterCatalog at present. We also load a publisher script from Impact on our pages. It counts page impressions; it does not change our links.
  • Error reports. When the site hits an error in your browser, a technical report (the error, the page and your browser type) is sent to Sentry, our error-monitoring service. Sentry's option to send personal data is turned off.
  • Hosting and abuse prevention. The site runs on Google Firebase. Like any web server, it receives your IP address and browser details with each request. To stop repeated automated sign-ups, the email-update service keeps a one-way hash of your IP address and browser user agent for rate limiting.
  • Product images. Some product photos load directly from retailer or manufacturer servers (for example Amazon), which receive the usual request information from your browser, such as your IP address.

3. Information stored only in your browser

Some features keep their data in your browser's local storage, on your device. This includes your comparison list, recently viewed products, the devices you save while signed in, and a record of the retailer links you have clicked. This data is not sent to us. You can remove it at any time by clearing your browser's site data for mattercatalog.com.

4. How we use information

  • To send the email updates you asked for.
  • To run accounts, saved devices and price alerts.
  • To understand which pages and links are useful, so we can improve the catalog.
  • To find and fix errors, and to prevent abuse.

We do not give your email address or account details to advertisers or retailers.

We do not show display ads, and we do not sell your personal information.

5. Services we use

  • Google: Firebase Hosting, Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore and Cloud Functions (to run the site, accounts, email updates and price alerts), and Google Analytics.
  • Sentry: error monitoring.
  • Impact: affiliate network (its publisher script on our pages counts page impressions).
  • Amazon Associates, eBay Partner Network, CJ, Rakuten Advertising and Awin: affiliate networks, only when you follow one of their links. Sovrn Commerce links are not in use at present.
  • Stores and manufacturers, when you follow a link to their sites.

6. Your choices

  • You can block or delete cookies in your browser, or use the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
  • You can use the site without an account and without giving us your email address.
  • To stop email updates or to ask us to delete your email address, account or price alerts, email team@mattercatalog.com.

7. Changes to this policy

When we change how the site handles information, we update this page and the date at the top.
