Thread vs Wi-Fi Matter devices: which should you buy?

Matter runs over Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The network decides what else you need: a Thread device needs a Thread border router, a Wi-Fi device does not.

Requirements come from platform documentation linked below; device counts and picks come from our catalog records. We have not performed hands-on testing. Editorial policy

The short answer

  • Choose Thread if you already have a Thread border router, or plan to add one. Many current smart speakers, displays and streaming boxes include one; see the list below.
  • Choose Wi-Fi if you have no Thread border router and do not want one. A Wi-Fi device joins your existing Wi-Fi network.
  • Either way, you need your platform’s Matter controller, such as a compatible Echo, Google hub, Apple home hub or iPhone, or SmartThings hub.

Which device types use which

In our catalog, sensors, locks, window coverings and remotes are mostly Thread, while plugs, switches, lights, thermostats and robot vacuums are mostly Wi-Fi. Counts cover products with a verified US store link; many records do not state their network clearly and are counted separately.

Counted from catalog records at publication. A record counts as Thread or Wi-Fi only when its protocol list says so without ambiguity.

Matched picks: one Thread, one Wi-Fi

Each pair is the same kind of device on a different network. Every pick has a photo, a verified store link and its certificate status from our catalog.

Before you buy

Requires a compatible Matter controller for your chosen Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings setup and a Thread border router. Bluetooth is used for setup. Energy history and schedules depend on the app and platform; do not assume every Matter controller exposes them. Check Eve’s current platform guidance.

Listed for Apple Home, Amazon Alexa and Google Home

Before you buy

A compatible Matter controller and Thread border router are required. An Aqara-branded hub is not a universal requirement. Check the mounting gap and the operating environment in the manual. Use the specified CR123A battery. Open/closed detection does not establish that a door is locked or a room is occupied. Do not assume weatherproof outdoor or mailbox use.

Meross MS600 Presence Sensor

Matter over Wi-FiCSA certified

Before you buy

A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and your platform’s Matter controller requirements. A Thread border router is not needed for this Wi-Fi sensor. Indoor placement with continuous power. The Meross store kit lists a power adapter and 1.5 m cable; select the US/CA version for that region. Check Amazon’s included accessories separately. Radar sensing is not a guarantee against missed or unwanted detections. Placement, sensitivity and platform automation support matter; do not treat this as a safety or security system.

Before you buy

Single-pole or supported multi-way. A compatible Matter controller and Thread border router. Advanced scenes and notifications depend on the platform. Non-neutral installations need configuration-specific checks. Budget for a bypass; non-neutral multi-way needs an Inovelli Aux switch. Confirm the current manual before purchase.

Do you already have a Thread border router?

  • Apple: Apple says Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub, such as HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation) or a Thread-capable Apple TV 4K, or a compatible third-party border router. The Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet model includes Thread; the Wi-Fi-only model does not. iPhone 15 Pro and later can control Thread accessories without a home hub.
  • Google: Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, Google TV Streamer (4K) and Google Home Speaker (2026) support Thread. Nest Mini, Nest Audio and Nest Hub (1st gen) do not.
  • Amazon: Amazon lists a built-in Thread border router in models including the Echo (4th Gen), Echo Hub, Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen) and several eero routers.

Thread vs Wi-Fi questions

Do Wi-Fi Matter devices need a Thread border router?

No. A Thread border router connects Thread devices to your home network. Matter devices that use Wi-Fi join your Wi-Fi network directly. Both kinds still need your platform’s Matter controller.

Can one hub control both Thread and Wi-Fi Matter devices?

Only if it supports both. Google lists the Nest Mini, Nest Audio and Nest Hub (1st gen) as Matter hubs for Wi-Fi devices only, and the Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, Google TV Streamer (4K) and Google Home Speaker (2026) as hubs that also support Thread.

Do Matter sensors and locks use Thread or Wi-Fi?

Mostly Thread in our catalog. Of the sensors with a verified US store link and a recorded network, 30 use Thread and 12 use Wi-Fi; for locks it is 28 Thread and 6 Wi-Fi.
