Bluetooth's role in Matter — commissioning and beyond

Most Matter devices — whether they ultimately communicate over Wi-Fi or Thread — use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for the initial commissioning process. When you add a new Matter device through your Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa app, your phone connects to the device via BLE to exchange credentials and onboard it to your network. This is why Matter devices have a QR code or numeric setup code: your phone scans it to find and authenticate the device.
