Bluetooth Matter Smart Home Devices
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) plays a critical role in the Matter ecosystem — it's the commissioning channel all Matter devices use during initial setup. Some Matter devices also use Bluetooth as their primary transport. Understanding where Bluetooth fits helps you choose the right devices for your smart home.
Bluetooth's role in Matter — commissioning and beyond
Every Matter device — whether it ultimately communicates over Wi-Fi or Thread — uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for the initial commissioning process. When you add a new Matter device through your Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa app, your phone connects to the device via BLE to exchange credentials and onboard it to your network. This is why all Matter devices have a QR code or numeric setup code: that's the BLE advertisement data that your phone scans.
Beyond commissioning, some Matter devices are specifically designed to operate over Bluetooth as their primary transport. These are typically proximity-based or short-range devices like smart locks, presence sensors, and personal item trackers where low-power operation and direct phone connectivity are priorities. Matter over BLE is well-suited for devices that are frequently interacted with directly from a phone rather than through hub automations.
Practically: if you're building a hub-centric automated home, you'll mostly interact with Thread and Wi-Fi devices. But if you want a smart lock that unlocks when your phone approaches — without a hub — Bluetooth Matter devices are the right choice.
