Wi-Fi Matter in 2026 — what you need to know
Matter over Wi-Fi uses your home's 2.4 GHz network as the transport layer, meaning your existing router handles all the connectivity. Every Matter controller (Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings) fully supports Wi-Fi devices — you don't need a Thread Border Router or any additional hardware. Just pair your device using your platform's app and you're done.
The main use cases for Matter Wi-Fi are devices that don't need to run on batteries: smart plugs, in-wall switches, light strips, thermostats, robot vacuums, and smart displays. These always-on devices benefit from the higher bandwidth and simpler setup that Wi-Fi provides. They also tend to respond faster to commands because Wi-Fi has lower round-trip latency than cloud-routed Zigbee or Z-Wave.
