Short answer
Which Nest thermostats work with Matter?
Two of the six Nest thermostats work with Matter: the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and the Nest Thermostat (2020). Both are on the CSA’s certification ledger and join Matter over Wi-Fi, so no Thread border router is needed. (CSA ledger, read Oct 26, 2026; Google Matter help, read Oct 27, 2026)
The other four (Thermostat E, Learning Thermostat (3rd gen), Learning Thermostat (2nd gen) and Learning Thermostat (1st gen)) have no Matter certificate and no Matter update in Google’s update history. Google ended app support for the 1st and 2nd gen Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025. (CSA ledger, read Oct 26, 2026; Google update history, read Oct 27, 2026; Google end-of-support notice, read Oct 27, 2026)
To share a Matter Nest with Apple Home or Alexa, set it up in the Google Home app first, then share it from there. (Google setup help, read Oct 27, 2026; Google Matter help, read Oct 27, 2026)

How do I know which Nest thermostat I have?
Look at the screen and ring, at the base, or in the app. Google says any of the three tells you. (Google, read Oct 27, 2026)
The screen and ring. A mirrored screen with a touch bar on the right of the ring is the Nest Thermostat (2020); a translucent white screen with a white plastic ring is the Nest Thermostat E; a rotating bangle with a push button is the Learning Thermostat (4th gen). A stainless steel ring means an older Learning Thermostat: a large screen is the 3rd gen, a small screen the 2nd or 1st gen, and a seam on the ring the 1st gen. (Google, read Oct 27, 2026)
The base. Pull the display off and count the wire connectors: 12 is the 4th gen; 10 with a blue bubble level on top is the 3rd gen; 10 with a yellow level on the bottom is the 2nd gen; 8 in straight rows is the 1st gen; 6 is the Nest Thermostat (an oval wire hole) or the Thermostat E (a circular one). (Google, read Oct 27, 2026)
The app. For a thermostat still in the Nest app or the Google Home app, the app shows its model, serial number and software version. (Google end-of-support notice, read Oct 27, 2026)
Does Nest work with Apple Home?
Yes, the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and the Nest Thermostat (2020) do, through Matter. The older Nest thermostats have no Matter, so they have no Apple Home path through it. (CSA ledger, read Oct 26, 2026; Google Matter help, read Oct 27, 2026; Google update history, read Oct 27, 2026)
Set the thermostat up in the Google Home app first: Google says these two can only be set up there, and a device must be set up with Google Home before you share it. In Google Home, open the thermostat’s settings, choose Linked Matter apps & services, and link Apple Home, or make a temporary pairing or QR code. Then add a new accessory in Apple Home and enter the code or scan it. (Google setup help, read Oct 27, 2026; Google Matter help, read Oct 27, 2026)
Two limits Google states: each app needs its own Matter hub, so check with Apple which of its devices works as one; and several apps can control the thermostat, but only one at a given moment. Google’s pages we read don’t say which thermostat controls Apple Home shows. (Google Matter help, read Oct 27, 2026)

Does Nest work with Alexa?
Yes for the Nest Thermostat (2020): Google’s store page says it works with Hey Google and Alexa, and that voice control needs a compatible device. Both Matter models can also be shared from Google Home to Alexa the same way as to Apple Home; Google’s Matter help names Amazon Alexa among the apps, and Alexa then needs its own Matter hub. (Google Store, Nest Thermostat, read Oct 27, 2026; Google Matter help, read Oct 27, 2026)
The 1st and 2nd gen Learning Thermostats lost their third-party assistants when Google ended their app support on October 25, 2025. (Google end-of-support notice, read Oct 27, 2026)
Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) vs Nest Thermostat (2020)
Both are Matter certified and join over Wi-Fi; the 4th gen controls more heating and cooling stages and rarely needs a C wire. (CSA ledger, read Oct 26, 2026; Google specs, read Oct 27, 2026; Google Store, 4th gen, read Oct 27, 2026; Google Store, Nest Thermostat, read Oct 27, 2026)
Systems: the 4th gen controls up to 3 heating and 3 cooling stages (a heat pump with up to 5 heating stages); the Nest Thermostat (2020) controls 1 stage of heating and cooling plus a second stage of either. (Google specs, read Oct 27, 2026)
C wire: Google says the 4th gen works with or without one, and under 1% of homes need a C wire or Nest Power Connector. The Nest Thermostat (2020) needs one, or the Nest Power Connector, on heating-only, cooling-only, zone-controlled and heat pump systems. (Google specs, read Oct 27, 2026)
Battery: a built-in rechargeable lithium battery in the 4th gen; 2 AAA alkaline batteries in the Nest Thermostat (2020). (Google specs, read Oct 27, 2026)
Sensor: the 4th gen comes with a Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen), and its software 2.4 added Matter bridge support so its thermostat sensors can work with other Matter devices. (Google specs, read Oct 27, 2026; Google update history, read Oct 27, 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Which Nest thermostats work with Matter?
Two of the six Nest thermostats work with Matter: the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and the Nest Thermostat (2020). Which Nest thermostat is the newest?
The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Google’s security-update list dates it August 20, 2024, the day it went on sale on the US Google Store, and says it gets security updates until at least August 20, 2029. (Google security-update list, read Oct 27, 2026)
Will the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) or Nest Thermostat E get Matter?
Google hasn’t said so on the pages we read. Its update history lists Matter only for the Nest Thermostat (software 1.3-10, June 12, 2023) and the 4th gen, and the latest update for the 3rd gen and Thermostat E, 6.5 (US, October 21, 2026), lists bug fixes and improvements. The CSA ledger has no certificate for either. (Google update history, read Oct 27, 2026; CSA ledger, read Oct 26, 2026)
Do the 1st and 2nd gen Nest Learning Thermostats still work?
On the device, yes: their schedules keep running and you can change modes and settings on the thermostat. Since October 25, 2025 they no longer work in the Nest or Google Home app, lost third-party assistants, and get no software or security updates. (Google end-of-support notice, read Oct 27, 2026)
Does a Nest thermostat need a Thread border router for Matter?
No. Both Matter models are certified on Wi-Fi, and Google’s Matter help says a Thread border router is needed only for devices that use Thread. Each app you share the thermostat with still needs its own Matter hub. (CSA ledger, read Oct 26, 2026; Google Matter help, read Oct 27, 2026)
Does a Nest thermostat have a battery?
Yes. Google lists a built-in rechargeable lithium battery for the Learning Thermostat (4th gen), 2 AAA alkaline batteries for the Nest Thermostat (2020), and a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery for the Thermostat E and the older Learning Thermostats. (Google specs, read Oct 27, 2026)
