Short answer

How do I automate my whole home with Matter?

As of Oct 28, 2026: pick one Matter controller you will keep (Apple Home with a HomePod mini or Apple TV, Google Home with a Nest Hub or another Matter-enabled hub, Alexa with an Echo, SmartThings with a SmartThings hub, or Home Assistant, which runs its own), then add certified devices room by room. Give every Thread device a Thread border router; many hubs are one. (Apple, read Oct 28, 2026; Google, read Oct 28, 2026; Amazon, checked Oct 1, 2026; Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 28, 2026; Home Assistant: Matter, read Oct 28, 2026)

We list 689 CSA-certified Matter products sold in the US, 490 on Wi-Fi and 145 on Thread, in 14 categories. Two starter kits close the plan, one built to fit under $150 and one under $300, with prices from store pages checked in the last 48 hours or “check price”. (our catalog; first-party store prices)

Which controller you need: Apple, Google, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant

Each cell is the platform’s own words, linked with the date we read them. A controller and a Thread border router are separate jobs; many hubs do both.

The Matter controller each platform needs, and what it says about Thread devices
PlatformWhat you need for MatterFor Thread devices
Apple Home

A home hub: “You must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories to the Home app.” When you set up a HomePod mini or HomePod, Apple says “they automatically become home hubs.” An Apple TV “becomes a home hub when you add it to a room in the Home app.” (Apple, read Oct 28, 2026)

“Thread-enabled Matter accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub, such as HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet, or a supported third-party border router.” (Apple, read Oct 28, 2026)

Google Home

A Matter-enabled hub: “Before you can add Matter-enabled devices to Google Home, you need a Matter-enabled hub device set up on your home wireless network”. Google lists speakers, displays, a Wi-Fi router and a TV streamer. (Google, read Oct 28, 2026)

For a mix of Thread and Wi-Fi devices, Google says “you need a hub device that also works as a Thread border router.” (Google, read Oct 28, 2026)

Amazon Alexa

An Echo that is a Matter controller. The Echo Hub and Echo Show 8 (2025 release) records show Amazon’s controller role, with Amazon’s own pages on file. (Amazon, checked Oct 1, 2026)

Amazon’s developer page on file lists as Thread border routers: Echo (4th Gen); Echo Hub; Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen); Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen); Echo Show 21; Echo Dot Max; Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release) and Echo Studio (2025 release); and the eero 6, eero 6+, eero Pro 6, eero Pro 6E and eero 7 family routers. (Amazon, checked Oct 1, 2026)

Samsung SmartThings

A SmartThings hub: “The Matter controller will be the hub responsible for controlling the Matter device after it is onboarded.” Samsung names the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub. (Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 28, 2026)

“The Matter badge on the device’s packaging will indicate if the device needs a Matter controller with a Thread border router.” (Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 28, 2026)

Home Assistant

Nothing to buy for the controller: Home Assistant runs its own Matter controller as an app, on Home Assistant OS. (Home Assistant: Matter, read Oct 28, 2026)

A Thread border router: Home Assistant with its OpenThread Border Router app on a Connect ZBT-2, or a Nest Hub (2nd gen), a HomePod mini or an Apple TV 4K. (Home Assistant: Matter, read Oct 28, 2026; Home Assistant: Connect ZBT-2, read Oct 28, 2026)

Entry: lock the door, know when it opens

Device types: a smart lock and a door or window contact sensor. Locks are mostly Thread, so you need a Thread border router; check your door and deadbolt against the maker’s fit guide first. (our catalog)

Living room: lights, plugs and shades

Device types: bulbs or a light strip, a smart plug for a lamp, and a motor for a roller shade. This is the room with the most daily use, so start here. (our catalog)

Kitchen: plugs, a light strip and a door sensor

Device types: plugs for small appliances, a strip under the cabinets, and a contact sensor for a pantry or back door. (our catalog)

A compatible Matter setup. Matter uses Wi-Fi; Zigbee requires switching firmware modes. Place the cable where water can reach it. The manufacturer specifies a five-second cable check interval; Economic mode disables the buzzer. IP44 does not mean submersible. A leak alert does not shut off water by itself. Choose a separate supported temperature sensor if you need freeze monitoring.

Safety: smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Starter kits under $150 and under $300

Each item is a pick from one of our guides, with the store page whose price we check. These are separate products, not a retailer bundle. A price shows in your browser only if its store page was checked in the last 48 hours, with the time of the check; otherwise the row says check price and the kit shows no total. You also need a Matter controller (see the table above).

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to start a Matter smart home?

A Matter controller for your platform and one certified Matter device. Apple needs a home hub (a HomePod mini, HomePod or Apple TV), Google a Matter-enabled hub, Samsung a SmartThings hub, Alexa an Echo that is a Matter controller; Home Assistant runs its own. The table above has each maker’s words. (Apple, read Oct 28, 2026; Google, read Oct 28, 2026; Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 28, 2026; Amazon, checked Oct 1, 2026; Home Assistant: Matter, read Oct 28, 2026)

Do I need a Thread border router?

Only for Thread devices. As of October 24, 2026, 145 of the 689 CSA-certified Matter products we list for the US use Thread and 490 use Wi-Fi. Apple, Google and Samsung each say a Thread device needs a Thread-capable hub or border router; Home Assistant needs one too, such as a Nest Hub (2nd gen), a HomePod mini or its own OpenThread Border Router app. (our catalog; Apple, read Oct 28, 2026; Google, read Oct 28, 2026; Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 28, 2026; Home Assistant: Matter, read Oct 28, 2026)

Can I use Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant together?

Yes, for devices that support it. Matter lets one device join several controllers: Home Assistant says you can add the same device to Google Home, Apple Home and Home Assistant at once, Samsung says this protocol allows multiple controllers from different brands, and Google says Matter-enabled devices can be controlled in multiple Matter-certified apps. Each controller still needs its own hub or border router where its page says so. (Home Assistant: Matter, read Oct 28, 2026; Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 28, 2026; Google, read Oct 28, 2026)

Is there a Matter smoke or carbon monoxide alarm?

As of October 24, 2026 we list 5 Matter smoke or carbon monoxide devices (alarms and sensors) sold in the US that are CSA certified for the exact model: HEIMAN S1-TM Smart Smoke Sensor with Temperature & Humidity, Sensereo MS1, HEIMAN S1-M Smart Smoke Sensor, Heiman smart CO sensor and Owl Wired Smoke & CO Alarm. Matter certification covers the Matter connection only. We have not checked any device’s fire-safety listing, so check it with the maker before you rely on it. (our catalog)

What is the best Matter thermostat for home automation?

Our thermostats guide lists Meross MTS300MA (24 V HVAC, configure the equipment first) and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) (24 V HVAC, learning schedules and a room sensor). We do not rank them: the right one depends on your heating and cooling system, so check the exact model against your wiring first. (our catalog)

How much does a Matter starter kit cost?

We built two: one to fit under $150 and one under $300, listed in the starter kit tables. Prices are read in your browser from the store pages we checked in the last 48 hours and shown with the time of the check; if any item has no recent price the table says check price instead of giving a total. (first-party store prices)

Which Matter smart lock fits a whole-home setup?

Both Level Lock (Matter) and the Aqara Smart Lock U400 use Thread, so they need a Thread border router and your platform’s Matter controller. Check your door and deadbolt against the maker’s fit guide before you order. (our catalog)
