What Is Matter 1.3?

Matter 1.3 is the third major update to the Matter smart home standard, released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) in 2024. It significantly expanded the types of devices that can receive Matter certification.

New Device Types in Matter 1.3

EV Chargers

Electric vehicle chargers can now be Matter-certified. This means you can control your home EV charger from Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa — set charging schedules, monitor power usage, and integrate with solar production data.

Microwave Ovens

Yes, really. Matter 1.3 adds smart microwave ovens to the ecosystem. While adoption is still early, you can expect to see Matter-certified microwaves that integrate with cooking automation routines.

Water Heaters

Smart water heaters with Matter certification can be scheduled and monitored remotely. Set heating schedules based on your calendar, monitor energy consumption, and integrate with solar production.

Refrigerators

Large appliances get a Matter makeover. Matter-certified refrigerators can share temperature data, alert you when left open, and integrate with home energy management systems.

Energy Reporting

All Matter devices in 1.3 can report detailed energy usage data — not just on/off state, but actual watt consumption. This powers whole-home energy dashboards and carbon footprint tracking.

What Stayed the Same

The core Matter experience — QR code pairing, local control, multi-admin, cross-ecosystem compatibility — is unchanged. Matter 1.3 devices work alongside all 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 devices.
