About Apple HomeKit and Matter

Apple Home (HomeKit) integrates Matter through HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd gen), and Apple TV 4K (2nd gen or later). These devices serve as Matter controllers, and models with Thread also act as Thread Border Routers. With iOS 16.1+, you can add Matter devices through the Apple Home app. Apple Home controls Matter accessories on your local network through the home hub, with remote access through iCloud; some accessories may still use their maker's cloud for app features.

How to add Matter devices to Apple HomeKit

  1. Make sure your Apple HomeKit controller (hub/speaker) is updated to the latest firmware.
  2. Put your Matter device in pairing mode (usually by holding the setup button).
  3. Open the Apple Home app and tap "Add Device."
  4. Scan the Matter QR code on the device or its packaging.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.
