Matter device won’t pair: what to check

Updated October 13, 2026 · Steps paraphrased from each platform's or maker's own help pages, linked beside each step. We have not tested these steps ourselves.

Short answer

Why won’t my Matter device pair?

The usual causes, by the platforms’ and makers’ own help pages: no Matter hub (or no Thread border router for a Thread device), Bluetooth off on the phone, the phone on a different or 5 GHz network, the device too far away, old firmware, an expired pairing window or code, or a device still paired to another home that needs a factory reset.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter setup; Samsung SmartThings; TP-Link troubleshooting)

Check the network first: of the 691 Matter certified products with a verified US store link in our catalog, 144 use Thread and need a Thread border router, and 493 use Wi-Fi.(our catalog)

Check these, in order

CauseWhat to do
No Matter hub for your appSet up the platform’s hub first: a home hub for Apple Home, a Matter-enabled hub for Google Home, a Matter-compatible Echo for Alexa, a Matter controller for SmartThings. If adding from a maker’s app gives an error, Google says to check that a compatible hub is set up.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter setup; TP-Link setup guide; Samsung SmartThings)
Thread device, no Thread border routerA device with the Thread logo needs a Thread border router near it (a HomePod mini, a Nest Hub (2nd gen), a Thread-capable Echo or SmartThings hub). Home Assistant shows the error “this device requires a border router”.(Apple: Matter accessories; Google: Matter setup; Amazon; Samsung SmartThings; Home Assistant)
Bluetooth offTurn Bluetooth on and allow the app to use it: the phone talks to the device over Bluetooth during setup.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter setup; TP-Link troubleshooting; Home Assistant)
Wrong Wi-Fi network or bandPut the phone, the hub and the device on the same Wi-Fi network, using 2.4 GHz: some devices cannot join 5 GHz networks. Avoid guest and IoT networks or separate VLANs during setup.(Apple: if you can’t add; Samsung SmartThings; TP-Link troubleshooting; Home Assistant)
IPv6 off on the routerGoogle lists IPv6 on the home router as a requirement; Govee says an IPv6 network is required for its Matter devices; Home Assistant says Matter relies on local IPv6 and multicast.(Google: Matter setup; Govee; Home Assistant)
Too far awayKeep the device near your phone and in range of the hub; Apple suggests bringing the accessory closer to the router.(Apple: if you can’t add; Samsung SmartThings)
Old firmware or appUpdate the phone, the platform app and the hub, and install the device maker’s latest firmware with the maker’s app.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter setup; TP-Link troubleshooting)
Pairing window or code expiredTP-Link and Govee say their devices accept Matter setup only for 15 minutes after power-up; power-cycle the device to start again. A sharing code from another app also expires, and TP-Link says a new code is invalid while an earlier one is still unused and unexpired.(TP-Link troubleshooting; Govee; TP-Link sharing guide)
Already paired or used in another homeIf the app says the device was already added, factory reset it by its maker’s instructions and start again; to add it to a second app instead, use a pairing code from the first app.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter setup; Samsung SmartThings)
Already in 5 appsA Matter device can be connected to at most 5 services; remove it from one first.(Samsung SmartThings)
Still stuckRestart the device, the hub and the phone, clear the app’s cache or fully restart the app, then try again; Apple also suggests unplugging bridges and home hubs for a moment.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter setup; Samsung SmartThings; TP-Link troubleshooting)

Platform-specific steps

Apple Home: Apple’s page covers the messages “accessory was already added”, “Unable to add to home”, “network is incompatible” and “accessory is not supported”, and the fix for each.(Apple: if you can’t add)

Google Home: if setup freezes, restart the device, close the app, clear its cache, restart the phone and try again; if it keeps failing, contact the maker, and you may need a factory reset.(Google: Matter setup)

SmartThings: Samsung’s troubleshooting covers a device that fails to onboard, a missing Wi-Fi or Thread network during setup (weak signal, not compatible) and a connected device that stops working.(Samsung SmartThings)

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Matter device keep failing to pair?

The platforms’ help pages list the same causes: no Matter hub or Thread border router, Bluetooth off, the phone on a different or 5 GHz network, the device out of range, old firmware, an expired pairing window or code, or a device still paired elsewhere that needs a factory reset.

Do Matter devices work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Apple says some accessories are not compatible with 5 GHz networks and suggests a 2.4 GHz network for setup; TP-Link says its Matter devices need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

Do I need IPv6 for Matter?

Google lists IPv6 enabled on your home router as a requirement for Matter in Google Home, and Govee says an IPv6 network is required for its Matter devices.
