Short answer
How do I add a Matter device to Google Home?
Put the device in pairing mode, open the Google Home app and tap Scan QR code on the pop-up, or tap Add Device at the top right and scan the device’s QR code (tap Add a different way if it will not scan). Follow the in-app steps, then choose a room and a name.(Google: Matter setup)
Before that you need a Matter-enabled hub for Google Home (a Google Home or Nest speaker, a Nest Hub display, Nest Wifi Pro or Google TV Streamer), IPv6 turned on in your Wi-Fi router, and for a Thread device a hub that is also a Thread border router: Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) and Google TV Streamer (4K).(Google: Matter setup; Google: prepare for Matter)
What you need first
A Google Account, a home Wi-Fi network with IPv6 enabled on the router, and a Matter-enabled hub for Google Home set up on that network. Google says you need the hub before you can add any Matter device.(Google: Matter setup; Google: prepare for Matter)
For a Matter device that uses Thread, a Thread border router. Google lists these hubs as supporting Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread: Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) and Google TV Streamer (4K).(Google: Matter setup; Google: prepare for Matter)
An Android phone or tablet on Android 8.1 or later, or an iPhone or iPad on iOS 16.5 or later, with Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher and the latest Google Home app. Look for the Matter logo on the device’s box.(Google: Matter setup)

Steps: add a new Matter device
- Plug the device in or charge it, power it on and put it in pairing mode as its maker describes.(Google: Matter setup)
- Watch for a pop-up on your phone (you may need to open the Google Home app first) and tap Scan QR code.(Google: Matter setup)
- No pop-up? Open the Google Home app, tap Add Device at the top right and scan the device’s QR code. If it will not scan, tap Add a different way, search for the device’s brand and select your device.(Google: Matter setup)
- Follow the in-app steps. When the device connects, choose its room and give it a name.(Google: Matter setup)
Google notes that these steps do not apply to Google Nest devices, and that a device you set up in its maker’s app can also be added to Google Home and used from either app.(Google: Matter setup)

A device set up in its maker’s app
When you set a device up in its maker’s app, that app may offer to share it with Google Home; accept, or follow the maker’s instructions to share it later. If the device then does not appear in Google Home, Google says to check that you accepted that prompt, and if you get an error at this step, to make sure a compatible hub is set up in the Google Home app.(Google: Matter setup)

If setup freezes or fails
Google’s steps: restart the Matter device, close the Google Home app, clear the app’s cache (on Android: Settings, Apps, Google Home, Storage & cache, Clear cache), restart your phone and start again. If it still fails, contact the device’s maker; you may need to factory reset the device.(Google: Matter setup)

Remove or move a Matter device
Touch and hold the device’s tile, open its settings and choose Remove device. Google suggests a factory reset before you add the device to another home, and after removing a device you no longer use.(Google: Matter setup)
