Updated October 13, 2026 · Steps paraphrased from each platform's or maker's own help pages, linked beside each step. We have not tested these steps ourselves.

Short answer

How do I add a Matter device to Alexa?

In the Alexa app, open Devices, tap +, then Add Device, choose Matter (under Other if it is not in the shortcuts), confirm the device is powered on, then tap Scan QR Code, or Try Numeric Code Instead to type the code. Pick the Wi-Fi network if asked, then name the device and choose a room.(TP-Link setup guide)

You need a Matter-compatible Echo. A Matter device that uses Thread also needs a Thread border router; Amazon lists these Echo models as Thread border routers: Echo (4th Gen); Echo Hub; Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen); Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen); Echo Show 21; Echo Dot Max; Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release) and Echo Studio (2025 release), plus several eero routers.(TP-Link setup guide; Amazon)

Where these steps come from

Amazon’s own help pages are not among the pages we read for this guide, so the Alexa app steps here follow TP-Link’s setup guide for its Tapo and Kasa Matter devices, which walks through the Alexa app screen by screen. Menu names can change with Alexa app updates; when they differ, follow the app.(TP-Link setup guide)

What you need first

A Matter-compatible Echo set up in the Alexa app, and the latest Alexa app and Echo software; TP-Link asks for both to be updated before you start.(TP-Link setup guide)

Your phone on the same Wi-Fi network as the Echo and the device; TP-Link says its Matter devices and the phone need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi during setup. Keep Bluetooth on and allow the Alexa app to use it.(TP-Link sharing guide; TP-Link troubleshooting)

If Alexa cannot add it

TP-Link’s checklist: update the device’s firmware and your Echo; keep the Echo and the device on the same local network (not a guest or IoT network or another VLAN); turn Bluetooth on; power-cycle the device if the 15-minute pairing window has passed; if the device is already in another app, use a new code from that app; and, as a last step, factory reset the device, reboot the Echo, clear the app cache and restart your phone.(TP-Link troubleshooting)
