Updated October 20, 2026 · Steps paraphrased from each platform's or maker's own help pages, linked beside each step. We have not tested these steps ourselves.

Short answer

How do I remove a Matter device from my app?

Remove it in the app it is in. In Apple Home, open the accessory, scroll to its settings and choose Remove Accessory. In Google Home, touch and hold its tile, open its settings and choose Remove device. In SmartThings, touch and hold it and choose Remove. In Home Assistant, use Manage fabrics to take one app off, or Delete to remove it from Home Assistant.(Apple: not responding; Google: Matter devices; SmartThings: devices; Home Assistant: Matter)

Removing it from one app leaves it working in the others. To clear it from everything, remove it from each app, then factory reset it, and keep its setup code so you can add it again.(TP-Link setup tips; Google: Matter devices; Home Assistant: Matter)

Apple Home and your iPhone

  1. In the Home app, select the accessory, scroll down to its settings and choose Remove Accessory. If that option is missing, remove it in the maker’s app.(Apple: not responding)
  2. To see every app an accessory is paired with, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, then General, then Matter Accessories, and tap the accessory. The list appears once at least one Matter accessory is paired.(Apple: Matter accessories)
  3. On that screen, tap Edit to remove the accessory from one connected service, from all of them, or only from iCloud Keychain, where its setup code is kept.(Apple: Matter accessories)

Apple says that once you remove a connected service, you can no longer control the accessory from that service’s app on your iPhone or iPad.(Apple: Matter accessories)

Alexa

We do not request Amazon’s own help pages, and the maker pages we read do not give the Alexa app’s removal steps, so they are not listed here. One thing to know before you start: TP-Link says that if you remove a device in its maker’s app, which factory resets it, it then shows as unresponsive in the other apps, so remove it in Alexa as well.(TP-Link setup tips)

What removing does

Removing a device from one app does not touch the others: TP-Link says it keeps working in every other app it is connected to. Once it is removed from all of them, it may need a restart or a reset before it goes back into pairing mode.(TP-Link setup tips)

Removing it in the maker’s own app can do more: TP-Link says removing a device in the Tapo or Kasa app factory resets it.(TP-Link setup tips)

Giving the device away or moving it to another home: Google suggests a factory reset before you add it to another home.(Google: Matter devices)

Moving a device to another app

You do not need to remove and reset a working device to use it in a new app, because one Matter device can join several apps. Create a pairing code in the app it is in now, add the device to the new app with that code, check that it works there, then remove it from the old app if you no longer want it there.(Google: Matter devices; TP-Link setup tips)

Moving a device to a different home inside Google Home works another way: Google’s steps remove it from the first home, switch to the other home and set it up again from Add Device.(Google: Matter devices)
