Short answer
How do I reset a Matter device?
Remove the device from your app first, then reset it by its maker’s own steps: for the makers below, holding a button or switching the power off and on several times. Then add it again with its setup code.(Google: Matter setup; Leviton; TP-Link bulbs)
Keep the device’s Matter setup code before you reset it: Home Assistant warns that you need it to add the device again.(Home Assistant)
When a reset is the fix
Apple says to reset an accessory when the Home app reports it was already added or used in another home, or cannot add it. Google says a device that keeps failing setup may need a factory reset, and suggests one before you move a device to another home or stop using it. Samsung lists resetting the device as one of its onboarding fixes.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter setup; Samsung SmartThings)
You do not need a reset to add a working device to a second app: create a pairing code in the app it is already in instead.(TP-Link sharing guide; Google: Matter setup)

- Remove the device from your apps: in Google Home, Remove device in its settings; on iPhone, Settings, General, Matter Accessories; in Home Assistant, Manage fabrics or Delete.(Google: Matter setup; Apple: Matter accessories; Home Assistant)
- Then reset it with its maker’s steps below, and add it again as a new device.(Google: Matter setup)

Reset steps by brand
From each maker’s own support page. Most of these pages describe a general factory reset (back to default settings) and do not mention Matter. Brands whose support pages we could not read are left out.(LIFX; Eve; TP-Link plugs; Shelly; Leviton; Google Nest; Philips Hue)
| Brand | Devices covered | How to reset | Products we list (US) |
|---|---|---|---|
| LIFX | Bulbs and lightstrips | Bulbs: with the light on, turn the power off and on at the switch five times, slowly and evenly; the light flashes its reset pattern. Lightstrips: hold the controller button for 10 to 15 seconds. LIFX Switches on Matter firmware use a separate button sequence on LIFX’s Switch page.(LIFX) | 35 |
| Eve | Each Eve product (Energy, Motion, Door & Window, Thermo, Aqua and more) | Most have a reset button: for Eve Energy, plugged in, press it until the LED flashes red; on Eve Motion and Door & Window it is inside the battery door (use a paper clip). Eve says to reset and re-add a device that will not join Matter after its Matter firmware upgrade.(Eve) | 13 |
| TP-Link (Tapo and Kasa) | Smart plugs; Tapo bulbs | Plugs: powered on, hold the power button for 10 seconds. Tapo bulbs: switch the power off and on 10 times with a one-second pause (5 times for Bluetooth models); the bulb blinks 3 times. Removing a plug or bulb in the Tapo or Kasa app also resets it.(TP-Link plugs; TP-Link bulbs) | 34 |
| Shelly | Shelly Plug US Gen4 | Within 60 seconds of plugging it in, hold the button for 10 seconds. Other Shelly models have their own knowledge-base pages.(Shelly) | 25 |
| Leviton | Decora Smart Wi-Fi plugs, outlets, dimmers, switches and fan controls | Hold the button (or the top of the rocker) for 14 seconds: the light turns amber at 7 seconds and flashes red and amber at 14; then release. Leviton says to remove a registered device from its app first.(Leviton) | 16 |
| Google Nest | Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | On the thermostat, open Settings, then Restart or Factory Reset, and confirm. Google says to note your wiring first, and that you then set the thermostat up and add it to your home again.(Google Nest) | 2 |
| Philips Hue | Hue bulbs, fixtures and lamps (not the Hue Bridge) | In the Hue app, add a light by its six-character serial number to reset it, or hold a Hue dimmer switch near the light and press its top and bottom buttons for 10 seconds. Hue suggests a reset when adding a light fails or before giving it away.(Philips Hue) | 10 |
