Short answer
How do I reset TP-Link Tapo and Kasa Matter devices?
For a Tapo or Kasa smart plug, power it on and hold the power button for 10 seconds to factory reset it (5 seconds is a soft reset that keeps your settings). For a Matter wall switch, hold the reset button under the on/off button for at least 10 seconds. A Tapo bulb resets by switching it off and on with a one-second pause; TP-Link’s two pages give different counts, shown below.(TP-Link: plugs; TP-Link: setup tips)
As of October 28, 2026, our catalog lists 33 TP-Link Tapo and Kasa products with a CSA Matter certificate for the exact model and a verified US store link (0 use Thread, 31 use Wi-Fi). 17 of them fall under a reset method on this page; each row below says which.(our catalog)

Before you reset a TP-Link device
- Find the Matter setup code (printed on the device or its box, or in the maker’s app) and keep a photo of it: after a reset it is the way back in.(TP-Link: setup tips; Home Assistant: Matter)
- Remove the device from the apps that hold it. On an iPhone, Settings, General, Matter Accessories lists what is paired and lets you remove it; in Google Home, open the device’s settings and remove it. Google adds that a device you no longer use should be factory reset after you remove it.(Apple: Matter accessories; Google: Matter devices)
- Then reset it with the maker’s steps on this page, and add it again as a new device.(Google: Matter devices)

Reset a Tapo or Kasa smart plug
- Soft reset (keeps your settings): power on the plug and hold the power button for 5 seconds.(TP-Link: plugs)
- Factory reset by button: power on the plug and hold the power button for 10 seconds. This also works when the plug is offline.(TP-Link: plugs)
- Factory reset by app (plug must be online): in the Tapo or Kasa app long-tap the plug’s card and tap the minus icon, or open the plug, tap the gear for Device Settings and tap Remove.(TP-Link: plugs)
Reset a Tapo bulb
- Turn the light switch that controls the bulb to on first, then switch it off and on with a one-second pause between each cycle. The bulb blinks three times when the reset worked.(TP-Link: bulbs)
- Wi-Fi-only Tapo bulbs: 5 cycles is a soft reset (keeps settings) and 10 cycles is a factory reset. Bluetooth-enabled models: 5 cycles is the factory reset, and you can change the Wi-Fi in the app (Device Settings, Network Connection, Switch Wi-Fi) without resetting.(TP-Link: bulbs)
- Any Tapo bulb can instead be removed in the Tapo app (long-press its card, tap the minus icon), which removes it from your account and restores the defaults.(TP-Link: bulbs)
A caution: TP-Link’s separate Matter FAQ says three power cycles for Tapo bulbs and five for Kasa bulbs. The bulb page above was updated more recently (July 29, 2026) and splits by connectivity. If the count you try does not give three blinks, check your bulb’s manual or ask TP-Link.(TP-Link: setup tips; TP-Link: bulbs)
Reset a Tapo or Kasa Matter wall switch or module
- Wall switch: press and hold the reset button, which sits below the on/off button, for at least 10 seconds. This resets the device to factory defaults and turns pairing mode back on.(TP-Link: setup tips)
- Tapo S112 module: hold the button for 5 seconds to reset Wi-Fi and keep settings, or for 10 seconds until the LED blinks red to restore factory settings.(TP-Link: Tapo S112)
What TP-Link says about Matter and resets
Removing a Matter-enabled device from the Tapo or Kasa app triggers a factory reset, and it then shows as unresponsive in every other app. If you remove it from one app it keeps working in the others; if you remove it from all of them you may need to restart or reset it to get pairing mode back.(TP-Link: setup tips)
The Matter setup code is on the casing and on a sticker in the box. If it is unreadable, set the device up in the Tapo or Kasa app and open Device Settings, Device Info, Matter Setup Code. The printed code works only for the first app; for a second app make a new code (valid for 15 minutes) in the first one.(TP-Link: setup tips; TP-Link: sharing)

If it will not pair after the reset
- Update the device’s firmware in the Tapo app and make sure your Matter hub is up to date.(TP-Link: troubleshooting)
- If the device is already in another ecosystem, make a new setup code there. Do not create pairing codes in several apps one after another: an earlier unused code makes the later ones invalid. Keep the app’s pairing-code page open while you enter or scan the code.(TP-Link: troubleshooting)
- Matter setup is open for only 15 minutes after power-on; power cycle the device to restart that timer.(TP-Link: troubleshooting)
- Keep the Matter controller and the TP-Link devices on the same local network. If either sits on a guest, IoT or other VLAN network, put both on your main network. TP-Link calls this the most important part.(TP-Link: troubleshooting)
- Some controllers pass a 5 GHz Wi-Fi name to the device, which only does 2.4 GHz. Set the device up in the Tapo or Kasa app first, then add it to the other platform.(TP-Link: troubleshooting)
- Last: factory reset the device and retry; then reboot the hub and the device, clear the apps’ cache and restart the phone. For Alexa, TP-Link says to close the app, toggle Bluetooth and pick your 2.4 GHz network within 5 seconds when the Wi-Fi page appears; for Apple Home, check that the first-listed home hub is online.(TP-Link: troubleshooting)

When to stop and contact TP-Link support
TP-Link’s pages end each answer with a link to TP-Link technical support. Go there when the reset does not give the confirmation (a 3-blink bulb, a red-blinking LED), when the device will not take a setup code after the checks above, or when your bulb’s count does not match either of TP-Link’s pages.(TP-Link: plugs; TP-Link: bulbs)
If the app cannot add the device after a reset
Apple’s checklist for a device the Home app cannot add: make sure the accessory is on and close to the router, unplug third-party bridges and home hubs and plug them back in, and if the app says the accessory is already added or was used in another home, reset it by its maker’s steps. If you cannot finish setup in TP-Link’s app, Google says to contact the device manufacturer.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter devices)

Frequently asked questions
How do I reset a Tapo or Kasa smart plug?
Power it on and hold the power button for 10 seconds for a factory reset, or 5 seconds for a soft reset that keeps your settings. TP-Link says the button method works even when the plug is offline.
How many times do I switch a Tapo bulb off and on to reset it?
TP-Link’s bulb page says 10 cycles to factory reset a Wi-Fi-only Tapo bulb and 5 for Bluetooth-enabled models, with a one-second pause and three blinks to confirm. Its Matter FAQ says three for Tapo bulbs, so check your bulb’s manual if one count does not work.
Does removing a Tapo device from the app reset it?
Yes. TP-Link says removing a Matter-enabled device from the Tapo or Kasa app triggers a factory reset, and it then shows as unresponsive in the other apps.
