Short answer
How do I add a Matter device to SmartThings?
In the SmartThings app, tap Add (+), then Add Device, tap Scan and scan the device’s QR code (or choose Enter under Enter setup code to type it), pick the hub and the room, wait for it to connect, choose the Wi-Fi or Thread network if asked, then rename it and tap Save.(Samsung SmartThings)
You need a SmartThings or other Matter controller (hub). For a Thread device, the controller needs a Thread border router, or you can connect a Thread border router from another brand.(Samsung SmartThings)
What you need first
A Matter controller for SmartThings: the hub that controls the device after setup. Samsung’s help article lists the controllers it knew of when it was posted, the SmartThings 2018 Hub and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub, and says the SmartThings 2015 Hub handles Wi-Fi and LAN Matter devices but has no Thread border router. SmartThings’ April 2023 blog post adds that the latest SmartThings Hub, the SmartThings Station, Samsung TVs and Samsung Family Hub refrigerators have Thread border routers built in.(Samsung SmartThings; SmartThings blog)
Your phone with the SmartThings app does the setup: on Android, SmartThings app 1.7.91 or later; on iPhone, iOS 16.2 or later with SmartThings app 1.6.94 or later. A Samsung hub needs firmware 45.9 or later.(Samsung SmartThings)
For a Thread device, a controller with a Thread border router. Samsung says a Thread border router from another brand also works: put it on the same network as your hub and enter that Thread network’s 32-character network key during setup.(Samsung SmartThings; SmartThings blog)

If SmartThings cannot add it
Samsung’s checklist: make sure a SmartThings or third-party Matter controller is in your home; make sure the QR code is fully visible (or use the numeric code); keep the device in pairing mode and in range of both your phone and the hub; reset the device by its maker’s instructions and fully restart the SmartThings app. If the network shows as weak, move the router closer; if it shows as not compatible, check that the device supports that Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) and security type.(Samsung SmartThings)
