How to reset Philips Hue Matter devices

Short answer

How do I reset Philips Hue Matter devices?

Hue lets you factory reset a light 5 ways: by its six-character serial number in the Hue app, from the app connected to a Bridge (Delete), with a Hue dimmer switch or a Hue Tap dial switch held next to the light, or in the app’s Bluetooth mode (Reset). A reset erases the light’s settings so it can join another Bridge or a Matter controller.(Philips Hue: reset)

As of October 28, 2026, our catalog lists 11 Philips Hue products with a CSA Matter certificate for the exact model and a verified US store link (10 use Thread, 0 use Wi-Fi). 10 of them fall under a reset method on this page; each row below says which.(our catalog)

Before you reset a Hue device

  1. Find the Matter setup code (printed on the device or its box, or in the maker’s app) and keep a photo of it: after a reset it is the way back in.(TP-Link: setup tips; Home Assistant: Matter)
  2. Remove the device from the apps that hold it. On an iPhone, Settings, General, Matter Accessories lists what is paired and lets you remove it; in Google Home, open the device’s settings and remove it. Google adds that a device you no longer use should be factory reset after you remove it.(Apple: Matter accessories; Google: Matter devices)
  3. Then reset it with the maker’s steps on this page, and add it again as a new device.(Google: Matter devices)

Five ways to reset a Hue light

  1. By serial number (no accessory needed): in the Hue app go to Settings, Lights, then the blue plus; choose Use serial number, enter the light’s six-character serial number (digits 0 to 9 and letters A to F, never the letter O), and tap Search. The light flashes when it is reset and appears in the app.(Philips Hue: reset)
  2. From the Hue app on a Bridge: only for a light that is already in the app and working. Settings, Lights, choose the light, tap Delete and follow the prompts.(Philips Hue: reset)
  3. With a Hue dimmer switch: switch the light’s power off and on, then within 30 minutes hold the dimmer’s top and bottom buttons together for at least 10 seconds while it is near the light. Release when the light flashes.(Philips Hue: reset)
  4. With a Hue Tap dial switch: power the light off and on, then within 30 minutes hold the switch near the light and press and hold the Setup button on its back for at least 10 seconds. Release when the light flashes.(Philips Hue: reset)
  5. In the Hue app in Bluetooth mode (no Bridge, dimmer or Tap dial): Settings, Lights, Add lights and follow the prompts to add the light you want to reset; then Settings, Lights, tap that light and tap Reset.(Philips Hue: reset)

Hue’s warning: a factory reset erases all personal settings and data, so do it only when needed and try troubleshooting first. If you are returning, selling or giving the lights away, reset them first.(Philips Hue: reset)

Two ways Hue uses Matter, and what a reset changes

With a Hue Bridge, Hue’s steps are to switch Matter on from the Hue app (Settings, Smart Home, then your platform); the guide does not call for a bulb reset. Without a Bridge, a Matter-enabled Hue light is added directly to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa by its Matter QR code or 11-digit code and needs a Thread border router.(Philips Hue: Matter guide)

If a bulb was on a Hue Bridge, remove it from the Bridge before pairing it directly over Matter. That is the usual reason to reset a Hue bulb for Matter.(Philips Hue: Matter guide)

Add the Hue light again

  1. Open your smart home app (Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa), add a new device, and scan the Matter QR code from the guide or type the 11-digit pairing code. Power the bulb on first.(Philips Hue: Matter guide)
  2. Lost the QR code? Use the manual pairing code printed on the bulb.(Philips Hue: Matter guide)
  3. To add the light to a second app, open the first app, generate a new Matter setup code there and enter it in the second app.(Philips Hue: Matter guide)

When to stop and contact support

Hue’s Matter guide lists the first checks for a bulb that does not respond: check power, keep the phone and the Matter hub on the same Wi-Fi network, restart or reset the bulb, and update its firmware and the apps. If setup in your platform’s app still fails after a reset, Google says to contact the device manufacturer for help.(Philips Hue: Matter guide; Google: Matter devices)

If the app cannot add the device after a reset

Apple’s checklist for a device the Home app cannot add: make sure the accessory is on and close to the router, unplug third-party bridges and home hubs and plug them back in, and if the app says the accessory is already added or was used in another home, reset it by its maker’s steps. If you cannot finish setup in Hue’s app, Google says to contact the device manufacturer.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter devices)
