Short answer

Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa: which is best for Matter?

Start with the phones, speakers or TV you already own: a Matter device works with all four platforms, and one device can be in several of them at once. Google says Matter devices can be controlled in several Matter apps at the same time, and Apple and Samsung say the same for theirs. (Google: Matter hubs, read Oct 21, 2026; Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 21, 2026; Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 21, 2026)

What differs: Apple Home needs an iPhone or iPad, and a HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub for control away from home and automations; Google Home needs a Google speaker, display, Nest Wifi Pro or Google TV Streamer as its hub; Alexa needs an Echo; SmartThings needs a SmartThings hub, Station or a Samsung TV or appliance that is one. Apple lists 9 Matter accessory types in its Home app; Google’s developer list is longer and includes robot vacuums, fans, air purifiers and smoke alarms. (Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 21, 2026; Google: Matter hubs, read Oct 21, 2026; Google: device types, read Oct 21, 2026; TP-Link, read Oct 21, 2026; Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 21, 2026)

Of the 691 Matter products we list that are CSA certified for the exact model and sold in the US, 359 list Apple Home, 349 Google Home, 375 Alexa and 263 SmartThings in their records. (our catalog)

Which platform fits your home

You have an iPhone: Apple Home is its Home app. You can start with the iPhone alone on iOS 18 or later; add a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K when you want control away from home, automations or Thread devices. (Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 21, 2026; Apple: home hub, read Oct 21, 2026)

You have Android phones or Nest speakers: Google Home. Check that your speaker or display is on Google’s hub list, and that it is on the Wi-Fi and Thread list if you want Thread devices. (Google: Matter hubs, read Oct 21, 2026)

You have Echo speakers: Alexa. Check your Echo against Amazon’s Thread list before you buy a Thread device. (Amazon, checked October 1, 2026; TP-Link, read Oct 21, 2026)

You have a Samsung TV, fridge or SmartThings hub: SmartThings. Samsung says the 2015 Hub works with Wi-Fi Matter devices and needs a Thread border router from another brand for Thread ones. (Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 21, 2026; SmartThings blog, read Oct 21, 2026)

A mixed household can use two platforms for the same devices: set the device up in one app, then share it to the other. (Google: Matter hubs, read Oct 21, 2026; Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 21, 2026; TP-Link: sharing, read Oct 21, 2026)

What Matter does not change

Each platform still needs its own hub for remote control and automations, and some features stay in the maker’s app. TP-Link, for example, recommends setting its Matter devices up in the Tapo or Kasa app first for full access to all features. (Apple: home hub, read Oct 21, 2026; Google: Matter hubs, read Oct 21, 2026; TP-Link, read Oct 21, 2026)

A device type the platform does not list may not show up, or may show limited controls. Google says only the types on its list are officially supported. (Google: device types, read Oct 21, 2026)

Picks from each side

Controller capability is distinct from a retail product’s certification record: a hub carries no CSA product certificate, because the CSA lists the platforms’ controller software, not the hardware. Each label says which job its maker documents. (Apple: home hub, read Oct 21, 2026; Google: Matter hubs, read Oct 21, 2026; Amazon pages on file; Samsung SmartThings, read Oct 21, 2026)

Apple Home hubs

Apple names these as Thread-enabled home hubs.

Google Home hubs

Google lists these as hubs for Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread.

Alexa hubs

A Matter controller and Thread border router, per Amazon’s pages on file.

SmartThings hubs

Samsung names this hub as a SmartThings Matter controller.
