Switch vs. Dimmer
On/off switches are simpler, cheaper, and work with any load type β LEDs, CFLs, incandescent, even fans. Dimmers let you adjust brightness but require compatible (dimmable) bulbs. If you use smart bulbs, a switch is usually sufficient β the bulb handles dimming.
Neutral Wire Requirement
Most Matter smart switches require a neutral wire in the electrical box. Homes built after ~1990 usually have them; older homes may not. The Inovelli Blue Series is the only switch on this list that works without a neutral wire (in dimmer mode). Check your wiring before buying.
Wi-Fi vs. Thread
Wi-Fi switches connect directly to your router β no hub needed. Simple to set up but add devices to your Wi-Fi network. Thread switches (like Inovelli) use a low-power mesh network that's more reliable and efficient, but require a Thread border router (Apple TV 4K, HomePod Mini, or similar).
Single-Pole vs. 3-Way
Single-pole switches control a light from one location. 3-way switches control the same light from two locations (like a hallway with switches at both ends). Most Matter switches support both configurations, but check the product specs. Some 3-way setups require an add-on companion switch.
Why Matter Matters for Switches
Matter ensures your switch works with every major ecosystem β Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings β without being locked into one app. It also means local control: your switch works even if the cloud goes down.
