Matter vs HomeKit: what is the difference?

Short answer

Is Matter the same as HomeKit?

No, and they are not rivals. HomeKit is Apple’s smart home framework: apps control accessories through it, and accessories built for it use the HomeKit Accessory Protocol (HAP). Matter is the CSA’s cross-platform standard. Apple Home has supported Matter since iOS 16.1 and runs Matter accessories alongside HAP ones, in the Home app, Siri and Control Center. (Apple Developer: Apple Home, read Oct 28, 2026; Apple Developer: Matter in iOS, read Oct 28, 2026; CSA: Matter, read Oct 11, 2026)

The practical difference is reach. A HAP-only accessory is built for Apple Home. A Matter accessory can join Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings at once (the CSA calls this multi-admin), and Apple lets you add one that another app already paired. Apple’s pairing page lists the Matter device types Apple Home supports: air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and sensors. (CSA: Matter FAQ, read Oct 11, 2026; Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 28, 2026)

As of October 28, 2026, 689 Matter products in our catalog are CSA certified for the exact model and sold in the US. 358 of them list Apple Home, and for 98 the maker’s own page on file names it. By category, the most Apple Home listings are lighting (163), switches (33) and plugs (32). We list Matter products, so we do not count HAP-only accessories. (our catalog; makers’ pages)

As of . Counts are Matter products sold in the US with a verified store link and a CSA certificate that names the exact model, from the MatterCatalog catalog. Each cell paraphrases or quotes the page it cites, linked with the day we read it. Where a page says nothing, the cell says so. Which one to buy for an Apple Home

Buy a Matter-certified accessory if you may ever use another platform, share devices with someone on Android, or want to move a device later: the CSA says one Matter device can be connected to several platforms. Check that Apple lists its device type. (CSA: Matter FAQ, read Oct 11, 2026; Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 28, 2026)

A HomeKit (HAP) accessory is built for Apple Home. Apple still enrolls accessory makers in its MFi Program and offers the HomeKit Accessory Protocol Specification to licensees; the pages we read do not say HomeKit is being replaced, and they describe Apple Home as running both kinds. (Apple Developer: Apple Home, read Oct 28, 2026; Apple Developer: Matter in iOS, read Oct 28, 2026)

Look for the Matter logo for the standard, and for the “Works with Apple Home” badge or the maker’s own page for Apple Home. We name Apple Home as supported only where the maker’s page does. (CSA: Matter FAQ, read Oct 11, 2026; Apple Developer: Apple Home, read Oct 28, 2026; makers’ pages)

The home hub and Thread

Wi-Fi Matter accessories need only your iPhone or iPad on iOS 18 or later, and Apple recommends a hub. Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub or a compatible third-party Thread border router in the home. The two hubs in the picks below are the ones Apple names. (Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 28, 2026)

Picks from each side

Apple’s two documented home hubs first, then one accessory of each kind whose maker names Apple Home on its own page. They are Matter accessories, so each also works with the other platforms. (makers’ pages; our catalog)

Apple Home hubs

Apple names these as Thread-enabled home hubs. Controller capability is distinct from a retail product’s certification record: a controller carries no CSA product certificate, because the CSA lists the platforms’ controller software, not the hardware.

Matter accessories whose maker names Apple Home

Each is CSA certified for the exact model, sold in the US, and has Apple Home named on the maker’s own page. One of each kind, on both networks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Matter replacing HomeKit?

On the pages we read, Apple describes Apple Home as running both: Apple Home supports Matter accessories, and apps can use the HomeKit API to control Matter accessories in addition to HAP accessories. Apple also still lists the MFi Program for HomeKit accessory makers. Neither page says one replaces the other. (Apple Developer: Matter in iOS, read Oct 28, 2026; Apple Developer: Apple Home, read Oct 28, 2026)

Does Apple Home work with Matter devices?

Yes. Apple Home has supported Matter since iOS 16.1, and Apple’s pairing page lists the types it supports: air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and sensors. Apple’s Home app page also names Matter robot vacuum cleaners for one feature. Check that your device’s type is on Apple’s pages. (Apple Developer: Matter in iOS, read Oct 28, 2026; Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 28, 2026; Apple: Home app, read Oct 28, 2026)

Do I need an Apple TV or HomePod for Matter devices?

Not for every device. Apple says an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, and recommends a hub for the best experience. Thread-based accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub, such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router. (Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 28, 2026)

Can one Matter device work with Apple Home and Alexa at the same time?

Yes, that is what multi-admin is for: the CSA says it lets users connect their Matter devices to multiple platforms, apps or other control points. Apple lets you add a Matter accessory that another app already paired, from any app that supports Matter. (CSA: Matter FAQ, read Oct 11, 2026; Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 28, 2026)

Is a HomeKit accessory the same as a Matter accessory?

No. Apple’s developer pages separate HAP accessories, which use the HomeKit Accessory Protocol licensed through the MFi Program, from Matter accessories, which are certified by the CSA. Apple Home runs both, and Apple publishes “Works with Apple Home” badge guidelines for Matter-certified accessories. (Apple Developer: Apple Home, read Oct 28, 2026; Apple Developer: Matter in iOS, read Oct 28, 2026)

How do I know a Matter accessory works with Apple Home?

Check three things: the product has a CSA certificate for the exact model, Apple lists its device type, and the maker’s own page names Apple Home. Our product pages show the first and say whether the third is on file. (Apple: Matter accessories, read Oct 28, 2026; makers’ pages; our catalog)
