Philips Hue vs Nanoleaf for Matter: Bridge, Thread or Wi-Fi

Hue lights reach Matter through a Hue Bridge, or directly over Thread if they carry the Matter logo. Nanoleaf’s certified lights join directly, over Thread or Wi-Fi. From Hue’s own page, the CSA records and Nanoleaf’s words on file.

Short answer

Philips Hue or Nanoleaf: which should I choose for Matter?

If you already have a Hue Bridge, Hue keeps one system: Hue says all its products, new and existing, work with Matter through the Bridge. Starting fresh, both brands’ Matter bulbs join your platform directly; you need a Thread border router for the Thread ones. (Philips Hue, read Oct 21, 2026; our catalog)

We list 10 Hue lights with a CSA Matter certificate sold in the US (10 name Thread) and 9 Nanoleaf lights (2 Thread, 7 Wi-Fi). Nanoleaf’s Wi-Fi lights need no Thread border router. (our catalog)

Hue’s page says Matter-enabled Hue bulbs (with the Matter logo) need a Thread border router such as a HomePod mini, an Echo (4th gen), a Nanoleaf product or a Nest Hub. Nanoleaf’s own page on file says its Matter bulbs work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. (Philips Hue, read Oct 21, 2026; makers’ pages)

Two ways to Matter: a Bridge or direct

Hue’s Bridge was updated to support Matter, so lights and accessories on a Bridge support Matter too. The Bridge path covers older Hue bulbs without the Matter logo. (Philips Hue, read Oct 21, 2026)

Hue products connected only over Bluetooth cannot be used with Matter, because the Bridge is what enables Matter; and the Hue Play HDMI sync box and the dial on the Tap dial switch do not support Matter, Hue says. (Philips Hue, read Oct 21, 2026)

Nanoleaf’s certified lights in our list join Matter directly, with no Nanoleaf hub. Nanoleaf’s page for its Thread Essentials bulb notes that it needs a Matter hub and a Thread border router. (makers’ pages; our catalog)

Which one for your home

You have Hue lights on a Bridge: stay with Hue, and add the Bridge to your platform once to bring every Hue light into Matter. (Philips Hue, read Oct 21, 2026)

No Thread border router at home: Nanoleaf’s Wi-Fi bulbs need only your platform’s Matter hub. (our catalog; makers’ pages)

Light strips and string lights: we list certified Nanoleaf strips and string lights; every certified Hue light in our list is a bulb or a downlight. (our catalog)

Frequently asked questions

Is Philips Hue or Nanoleaf better for Matter?

Neither is better for every home. Hue suits a home that has, or wants, a Hue Bridge: every Hue light reaches Matter through it. Nanoleaf’s certified lights join directly, and its Wi-Fi bulbs need no Thread border router. (Philips Hue, read Oct 21, 2026; our catalog)

Do I need a Hue Bridge for Matter?

Not for Hue bulbs with the Matter logo: Hue says those join directly with a Thread border router. Hue lights without the Matter logo need the Bridge, which brings all Hue products into Matter. (Philips Hue, read Oct 21, 2026)

Do Nanoleaf bulbs need a hub?

They need your platform’s Matter hub, not a Nanoleaf hub. The Thread versions also need a Thread border router, Nanoleaf’s page on file says. (makers’ pages; our catalog)

Can Philips Hue and Nanoleaf work together?

Yes, in one Matter platform. Hue even names Nanoleaf as an example of a Thread border router for its Matter bulbs. (Philips Hue, read Oct 21, 2026)
