How to update the firmware of a Matter device

Updated October 20, 2026 · Steps paraphrased from each platform's or maker's own help pages, linked beside each step. We have not tested these steps ourselves.

Short answer

How do I update a Matter device’s firmware?

Use the maker’s own app. Apple sends you there for accessory firmware, and TP-Link recommends adding its devices to the Tapo or Kasa app first so they get the latest firmware. Matter also has an optional over-the-air (OTA) update feature, which some apps, such as Home Assistant, can use.(Apple: if you can’t add; TP-Link troubleshooting; CSA; Home Assistant: Matter)

Update the hub too. Samsung requires SmartThings hub firmware 45.9 or later for Matter, and Google’s own hubs update themselves once they are added to the Google Home app.(Samsung SmartThings; Google: prepare for Matter)

How Matter devices get updates

The CSA, which runs the Matter standard, says a Matter device can update itself with the over-the-air feature built into the standard, or with its maker’s own update method, and that updates can bring new features and security fixes.(CSA)

Over-the-air updates are optional, so not every device supports them. Makers can publish update details on the CSA’s Distributed Compliance Ledger, which apps such as Home Assistant check.(Home Assistant: Matter)

Apple Home

Apple sends you to the maker for accessory firmware: if the Home app says an accessory is not supported, install the maker’s app and its latest firmware, and if an accessory is not responding, check the maker’s app for an update.(Apple: if you can’t add; Apple: not responding)

Keep your iPhone or iPad up to date as well: it is the first item on Apple’s checklist when an accessory cannot be added.(Apple: if you can’t add)

Google Home

Google’s hubs (its speakers, displays, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer) receive updates automatically once they are in the Google Home app. The Google Matter pages we read do not describe updating another maker’s device from Google Home, so use that maker’s app.(Google: prepare for Matter)

Google adds that each Matter platform supports new kinds of devices at its own pace, so a newer type of device may need Google Home to add support for it; Google keeps a list of the device types it supports.(Google: prepare for Matter)

SmartThings

Samsung’s SmartThings hubs need firmware 45.9 or later for Matter, and the phone that sets devices up needs SmartThings app 1.7.91 or later on Android, or iOS 16.2 with app 1.6.94 or later on iPhone.(Samsung SmartThings)

Samsung also notes that some devices made before Matter can gain it through a firmware update, depending on the device.(Samsung SmartThings)

Home Assistant

Home Assistant shows an update entity for each Matter device that supports Matter’s over-the-air updates, and looks for new firmware on the CSA’s ledger twice a day. You can force a check with the homeassistant.update_entity action.(Home Assistant: Matter)

Home Assistant names Eve and Nanoleaf as makers that publish updates this way. It also warns that its Matter updates do not work for Thread devices on a network with an Apple border router, where you see the error “Target node did not process the update file”; Apple Home may offer the update instead, or you can add another border router.(Home Assistant: Matter)

In the maker’s app

TP-Link: in the Tapo app, open Me, then Firmware Update. TP-Link suggests adding a device to the Tapo or Kasa app first so it can install new firmware before you add it to another app.(TP-Link troubleshooting)

Eve: Eve says its Thread devices receive free firmware updates that add Matter, and that if a device cannot be added again after that upgrade, you reset it and use the Matter setup code Eve gave you when the upgrade began.(Eve)

Frequently asked questions

Does Apple Home update Matter device firmware?

Apple’s pages send you to the accessory maker’s app for firmware. Home Assistant notes that Apple Home may offer some updates, for example for Eve devices, on Thread networks where its own Matter updates cannot run.

Do Matter devices update automatically?

It depends on the maker and the app. Matter includes an optional over-the-air update feature; Home Assistant checks for those updates every 12 hours, and makers can also deliver updates through their own apps.

Can a firmware update add Matter to an older device?

Sometimes. The CSA says many existing products can get Matter through a software update if the maker offers one, and Eve and Samsung both describe devices that gained Matter this way.
